Square Enix Montreal will no longer be called that. Embracer Group changes the name to the study after taking over the western studies of the Japanese company.
The purchases of large studios at the hands of larger ones is one of the most viewed trends throughout this 2022. In recent months we have had a number of acquisitions within the video game industry.
One of the most recent has run from the hand of Embracer Group. The European studio holding company continues to grow and even more so after the purchase of Square Enix’s western studios (Crystal Dynamics, Eidos Montreal and Square Enix Montréal).
All these companies also add their licenses, such as tomb Raider, for instance. Embracer Group says it has several plans for the studios and their sagas, but first of all, it has already made a change that is less relevant, but important for the future of the company.

The new name of Square Enix Montreal
Square Enix Montreal changes its name, something that could be expected. The Canadian studio will now be called Studio Onoma and will have a new role within the business group.
As reported by Embracer Group in this study “will serve as an umbrella for multiple products, programs and initiatives, each with distinct personalities” and will serve “to be flexible to see us in the future, connect with multiple audiences.
It has also been made clear why this particular name was chosen: Onoma means name in Greek and names offer endless possibilities. Names give life to objects, people or concepts; bring them into the world, real or imagined.
It is the beginning of a new experience, an invitation to embark on a new journey. As creators of games, we are creators of new experiences, of new pathscommented the study itself.
In case you want to know more about the studio so far, Square Enix Montreal had specialized in launching mobile games from different important sagas such as Lara Croft GO, Deus Ex GO, Hitman GO, Hitman Sniper and Hitman Sniper: The Shadows. Will we see new Tomb Raider?
Regarding Embracer Group, the company continues to detail its future plans after the many purchases it has made. Without going any further, with the IP of The Lord of the Rings we can expect games for decades.
Last summer, Square Enix shared why it sold Crystal Dynamics and Eidos to Embracer Group. Apparently, the titles released by these companies cannibalize the sales of the rest of the group and, therefore, could improve the efficiency of capital.
