Based on the novel by Min Jin Lee, this period drama series is set in the year 1900 in a small island fishing village in the Yeongdo District, near the city of Busan.

There a girl named Sunja is born who, when she turns 16, ends up falling madly in love with a handsome stranger on the shore near her house.

Said stranger is actually Koh Hansu, a Zainichi (Korean resident in Japan) and wealthy businessman who, not only is he married, but he also has ties to the Yakuza, the Japanese mafia.

When Sunja becomes pregnant, she has no choice but to accept a marriage proposal from a minister who was passing through Japan, which leads her to face some very complicated situations.
