The creator of Dragon Quest has accepted the lifetime achievement award at GDC 2022. After this, Yuji Horii himself has promised that he will new announcements about the saga very soon.

This means that perhaps he will talk a bit more about the upcoming Dragon Quest XII, although Horii has talked about what’s new around the franchise in general.

The creative and director has received it with good grace -it is not for less- during the event that took place in San Francisco this past morning.

The Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes career and achievements as a developer that have had a “indelible impact on game making and games as a whole“.

At least this is how they have described the prize in the official website of the Game Developers Choice event.

Through a video message (Thank you, Gematsu), Own Horii has wanted to speak in public and by the way, thank all this love in the form of an award that the industry has given him.

Hello, this is Yuji Horii. Thank you so much for choosing me to receive the prestigious GDC Lifetime Achievement Award“, the director began.

Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate will underpin the next 10-20 years of the saga, says Square Enix president

Dragon Quest XIIDragon Quest XII

When I was little I loved reading manga and during middle school and high school I dreamed of being a manga author. In college I joined a manga society where I drew my own, helped professional artists with their manuscripts, and even gave illustrations and articles to magazines.

After graduating I worked for a while as a freelance writer, but then something happened that changed everything, the arrival of the home computer.

The first time I read about computers was in a newspaper article and I was fascinated by this new invention. I went out to buy one right away. Also, I’ve always liked math, so I quickly got my new toy.

I learned to code and started creating my own games for fun. Back then, Enix – now Square Enix – held a game programming contest. I submitted one of my games and won. Thus began my career in the video game industry, which has continued for almost 40 years..

I won with an action game that I made for fun, but at the time I was more into adventure games, so I decided to make them. A game where the story progresses as you play, with murders happening one after the other: the case of the Portopia serial murders.

In Portopia, the person who gives the instructions to the ‘What are you going to do now?’ is actually the killer. That twist got me a ton of good reviews and a lot more requests to make new games.“.

One of the great things about computers is their interactive nature. You just have to imagine what the player is going to do and then program the system to react. I really liked that kind of systematic storytelling.

I also loved RPGs like Wizardry and Ultima, where the game followed the rails established by the story. So I made my own version: Dragon Quest. For me it was like a manga, in which the story unfolded through small conversations.

It was like a manga that could be played on the computer. My team and I are working on the latest installment in the series, Dragon Quest XII, as well as many other titles. I hope everyone enjoys them as much as they did Dragon Quest XI. Soon we will have more announcements for you“.

And so far their comments have come, without a doubt Yuji Horii seems like a nice person who deserves this prize for his career for his works and what has achieved thanks to Dragon Quest.
