Arturo Pérez-Reverte values video games as the future of the novel

The well-known Spanish writer Arturo Pérez-Reverte has been talking about the future of the novel and has been very convinced that the next big step for literature is video games.

We live in times of change and although it is already clear that the video game industry is already a well-established entertainment mediummany do not just see that this can compete in terms of narrative power with the most traditional cinema or literature.

Curiously, one of the most representative figures of this last sector, the novelist Pérez-Revertehas launched a small plea showing that video games have ample potential to represent the generational change to the most consecrated reading that we all know.

The youtuber and now interviewer, Jordi Wild, who has become very famous thanks to his varied podcast (The Wild Project) invited Pérez-Reverte to talk with him about numerous topics and video games also made an appearance.

During the talk, Wild launched a small reflection in which he comments the lack of interest in reading of the youngest (and not so young) that right now was emerging in society. The content creator asked Pérez-Reverte if it wasn’t something dramatic.

Surprisingly, the writer was very pragmatic and recognized that the world was changing and that now the baton of storytelling was carried by other media more firmly.

If I were a young writer, I would write video game scripts., recognized the veteran writer to the surprise of his audience. The video game can be a very powerful heir to the novels. What do you think about this matter?

This sector has shown on many occasions that it can be a profoundly narrative medium and not only as a standard bearer of the most standard storytelling formula, but also proposes new ways of living magical stories and moments. Video games have another strong point, the interaction they present.

Reverte is not the only well-known voice that has been convinced of the power of video games to tell stories. Some time ago, Joseph Gordon-Lewitt was of the opinion that “the future of storytelling is in video games, not in the movies.”
