A new leak has left us the possible price of the Intel Alder Lake-S, a new generation of high-performance desktop processors with which Intel will face the Ryzen 5000 from AMD, and which will be the first range of x86 processors to general consumption that you will use a “big.LITTLE” designIn other words, the first to have two different core blocks, one high-performance and the other high-efficiency.
In the high-performance block we will have cores Golden cove, an architecture that increases the IPC compared to Willow Cove, an architecture that is present in Intel Tiger Lake processors, and that was adapted to 14 nm in Rocket Lake-S, where it was implemented under the name of Cypress Cove. In contrast, in the block of high-efficiency cores we will have cores GracemontA successor architecture to Tremont, known for bringing Intel’s Atom, Celeron and Pentium chips to life.
Before continuing, it is important to remember that this is not the first time we have talked about the prices of the Intel Alder Lake-S. A couple of weeks ago we saw, in this news, a leak that left us the possible prices of this new generation of processors in Europe, and the truth is that the figures were quite high. Today, thanks to this new leak that leaves us the possible price of Intel Alder Lake-S in the United States, we can compare and assess if both leaks fit, or if, on the contrary, they are meaningless.
Intel Alder Lake-S Price: Starting at $ 261.77
The image that collects all filtered prices is very clear. The cheapest processor would be the Intel Core i5-12600KF, a chip that will come with the multiplier unlocked and that will have the iGPU disabled (this is what the letter “F” indicates). This chip will have a configuration of 6 high-performance cores and 4 high-efficiency cores. Only high-performance cores will support HyperThreading, so this is a chip with 16 threads in total. Its price would be $ 261.77.
In the leak of the prices of the Intel Alder Lake-S listed in Europe we saw that this same chip was going to cost 275.70 euros without taxes, and 333.60 euros including taxes, Figures that fit perfectly with those $ 261.77. I have seen the same trend in the rest of prices, since for example, the Intel Core i9-12900K, which will have 8 high-performance cores and 8 low-power cores (24 threads in total), was listed with a price of 608.42 euros in Europe without tax, and for $ 604.89 in this new leak.
The prices of the Intel Alder Lake-S that we have been seeing so far make a lot of sense, but we must always bear in mind that when dealing with leaks based on early listings they do not have to be fulfilled directly. Rather we should interpret them as approximate prices that should not be too far of the possible final prices that this new generation will have.
Intel Alder Lake-S will be a major leap
And not just when it comes to performance. We have already seen several tests where the Intel Core i9-12900K has been able to outperform the Ryzen 9 5950X, although in single wire performance. This fits in with what one would expect from the increase in the IPC that Intel has achieved with the Golden Cove architecture, but it remains to be seen if it is also capable of surpassing the AMD chip in multithreading, something that seems complicated to me, since it has 16 cores and 32 threads.
Beyond raw power, we must highlight the value of specialization at Alder Lake-S. This new generation of high-performance processors will divide tasks into two large blocks of cores. The high-efficiency cores will take care of the tasks that are in the background, and those that require less power, maximizing efficiency, while the high-performance cores will take care of carrying out the most demanding tasks, and those that remain spotlight.
In order to achieve efficient management of the two blocks of nuclei, it is necessary to optimally distribute the different tasks between them. In this sense, the chip giant confirmed that it has everything planned, and that Intel Thread Director will be in charge of the distribution of tasks between these two blocks of nuclei that, in addition, will be able to work concurrently.
