May the maelstrom of launches in September not make us forget Kena: Bridge of Spirits, an action adventure with a fantastic, almost fairytale tint, which will be released next week (September 21) on PlayStation 5, PS4 and PC via the Epic Games Store.
There have already been multiple gameplay trailers and videos for the game, which was delayed for a few months. But today, its authors, Ember Lab, have shared some details about the design and animation of its protagonist on the PlayStation blog.
“Kena is a young Spirit Guide who travels to an abandoned village in search of a sacred mountain sanctuary, and who must help the wandering spirit that is trapped”, introduces Hunter Schmidt, animation director for Ember Lab.
Kena’s first design was created by Wanchana “Vic” Intrasombat, and evolved from a very young woman to a more mature and aged one, because they wanted to convey that she was skilled and that she had vital experience in helping the other characters in the story.
Rodrigo Gonçalves and Carlos Ortega were the ones who created Kena in 3D: “For hair, we finally found a combination between solid geometry, which can give very clean shapes and captures light very well, and alpha planes to show the detail of individual hair strands giving more variation and imperfection.”
The game’s designs have attracted a lot of users’ attention, and even one of its actors has noticed the game’s resemblance to a Pixar movie. For Schmidt, much of his personality is conveyed by the way he moves, creating expressions with great expressive range and emotional depth, reflecting the quality and compassion of the heroine.
In fact, although they have used physics on other characters in the game, all aspects of Kena have been animated by hand.
Don’t miss Kena Bridge of Spirits next week, September 21, on PS5, PS4 and PC, a game that could be one of this year’s surprises and one of the best exclusives to power the SSD of our PS5.
