Guardians of the Galaxy, the new game from Eidos-Montréal and Square Enix, was one of the most pleasant surprises of E3: a game that showed numerous gameplay, comes out on all platforms (including Switch) and was not leaked beforehand. Well, the latter is not true, although perhaps no one expected that it was a game that we had barely heard about a month ago would come out so soon: October 26, 2021.
According to its creators, part of the reason the game comes out on this date and not later is the decision to focus on a single player game, with a single playable character… although they also attribute it to some luck: they had it all ready when the pandemic hit, and their development hardly suffered from it.
Its gameplay director, Patrick Fortier, explains it like this: “I think that we were lucky with the pandemic. We reached a point where the team knew where we were going, and we were able to maintain momentum. And then in four days, everyone was working from home with all the things they needed to make the game, and then it was time to finally announce it and see people’s reactions.“.

From the first moment they decided that Star-Lord was the only playable character, something that allows to reinforce the character, the movements and the progression of the player throughout the game, instead of being divided between many characters with superficial differences between them, one of the most common criticisms of Marvel’s Avengers.
However, it states that there is a interaction system that will make the rest of the characters (Gamora, Groot, Drax and Rocket Racoon) feel more alive. “From time to time you will see the characters joking with each other and you can decide to enter and interfere in their discussion, or simply decide to do nothing and see how they react, which will change your gaming experience.“.
Finally, he explained that it was important to find a balance between action and narrative. “If we were going to have a deep narrative focus, then we couldn’t do a certain kind of game. We felt like maybe that kind of game had already been done.”. After all, Telltale already played a narrative game with the Guardians of the Galaxy.
“When you talk about this game in ten years, what is the thing that people will remember? We hope that the Guardians seem alive, and that it really seems that I was part of the Guardians of the Galaxy.”
