The acquisition of Gearbox Entertainment by Embracer Group. As announced a few months ago, the Swedish holding company Embracer has bought the studio behind sagas like Borderlands, for the sum of $ 1.3 billion.
In the official statement following the deal, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford states that “We are now better positioned to launch new IPs, do more with your existing brands, grow our incredible team, and benefit from new opportunities in our mission to entertain the world. This is just the beginning.“
Embracer It now has 63 in-house development studios, including Deep Silver (Saints Row), Saber Inreractive, THQ Nordiq and Coffee Stain (Valheim), adding more than 7,000 employees in 40 countries. Gearbox has 550 employees in its Frisco, Texas and Quecec City offices.
The Borderlands saga has been the most successful of Gearbox, whose latest installment, Borderlands 3, it came out in 2019 (and you can get it for free with PS Plus this month). A Borderlands movie with Pitchford serving as producer is currently in the works, who announced a new cast addition yesterday and revealed the synopsis.
In addition to Borderlands, Gearbox has worked (with mixed results) with IPs such as Duke Nukem, Brothers in Arms or Half-Life. Despite the success of Borderlands, it has also had punctures, like Aliens Colonial Marines. Battleborn It was an attempt to launch a new IP, in 2016, but it did not work. Will they have better luck now that they have the Embracer mattress?
