Last year a title was announced that attracted a lot of attention for its spectacular next-gen graphics, its “Souls” style gameplay and its artistic design. Is Black Myth Wukong, an action RPG developed by the independent Chinese studio Game Science, which from now on will have the financial support of Tencent, one of the largest technology companies in the world.
According to analyst Niko Partners Daniel ahmad, Tencent has bought a 5% minority stake in Game Science. Thanks to this agreement, Game Science will have direct technical support from Epic Games, as Black Myth is made in Unreal Engine 4 (Tencent is also a major investor in Epic Games.)
Of course, Game Science will continue to operate independently, and Tencent will not interfere in the development of the game.
Tencent’s goal with this agreement is Boost China’s PC and Console Video Game Industry. Revenue from the video game division at Tencent increased in 2020 over the previous year, although the majority came from the mobile gaming market. Tencent is responsible for some of the most popular mobile games in China, such as Moonlight Blade, in addition to distributing in China games such as Call of Duty Mobile or PUBG Mobile.
They also own Riot Games (with hits like Valorant and League of Legends), and will soon be getting a taste of Pokémon fever with the MOBA as well. Pokémon Unite.
