Last year many video game events were canceled, such as E3 or Blizzcon, because of the pandemic and the effects it had on our daily lives. Instead we had online versions (which is the path E3 will follow this year, if the initiative goes ahead), and the same will happen this 2021.
This time it was PAX East. The Boston Video Game Fair It was going to be held from June 3 to 6 of this year, but finally the organizers of the event have confirmed that it is canceled. Of course, it will become the PAX Online 2021, a digital event with many game announcements.
In 2020, PAX East could be held in Boston, since it took place at the end of February (before the confinement and explosion of COVID-19 around the world). This 2021 it was thought that a face-to-face edition could be held in June, but it has been decided that it is better to cancel it to the detriment of an online edition.
Fortunately, the organizers had not announced the programming or the sale of tickets, so this decision will not affect the public or the studios. In this way, PAX East 2021 becomes PAX Online 2021, digital event that will take place July 15-18 of this year.
Penny Arcade and ReedPop, the organizers of PAX, have not yet spoken with the other two editions of the fair for this year. It’s about the PAX West and PAX Unplugged, which will take place in September and December respectively. The situation is expected to have improved by then, although it is not ruled out that they will also become digital events.
Regarding other video game fairs such as the E3, there is a great uncertainty behind. There will not be a physical event like before the pandemic, and instead a digital fair (in the style of Steam events) is planned, although everything it depends on the support you receive from video game studios and companies.
The PAX Online 2021 will be held from July 15-18, unless there is a last minute change. We will have to wait until the end of the year or even 2022 to see a PAX East like those of yesteryear.
