The Google Messages app for Android implements end-to-end encryption

Mensajes de Google

This good news has long been expected and change is already underwayAlthough it will still take time to reach the bulk of the target users. We talk about End-to-end encryption in the Google Messages app, the most popular of its kind for Android phones.

Putting the subject in perspective, Google Messages is the most popular application in its category, it is worth repeating, and it is not because Google embeds it with impunity in every Android device that comes out on the market. Contrary to what the Internet giant does with several of its main applications and services, Google Messages is the most downloaded message app on the Play Store because users have decided to do so.

A few months ago, Google Messages exceeded a billion downloads, which is said soon. How could it be otherwise, the company has it high on the list of results of the Play Store, that must also be taken into account; But one thing does not take away from the other, and that is that being on Android, using a Google app to manage messages does not seem crazy either.

Because Google Messages, in case it is necessary to specify it, is exactly what it is: it is a messaging application, specifically designed to manage mobile SMS messages. But, of course, SMS messages (also MMS) are in the doldrums, among other things, due to the lack of security and privacy they present. On the other hand, both protocols are a standard that closed applications like WhatsApp cannot supply, no matter how popular they are.

Thus, the (SMS Short Messaging Service) and the MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) will be succeeded by the RCS (Rich Communication Service), a new standard created precisely to solve the shortcomings of the former. A new standard that is already in operation in different applications, but which still need a boil to reach Google Messages.

However, the leap is getting closer and closer and the company is about to launch the Google Messages beta with end-to-end encryption, which will be activated automatically if both users have enabled RCS features on their phones. Once the trial period is considered completed, the functionality will be extended gradually throughout 2021.
