It is not yet a week since the iPhone 12 was finally presented, and we already have a first “surprise”. And yes, quotation marks are a stylistic device to indicate that, although we usually associate surprise with something positive, this is not the case. And, to make matters worse, it turns out that it is a problem that affects one of the most anticipated functions in the new generation Apple’s smartphone, a long-awaited function and that, until the very presentation, we could not confirm that it was present on the iPhone.
I am talking, of course, about 5G connectivity. It is true that the deployment of these networks, which should have been carried out in 2020, has been seriously hampered by the coronavirus pandemic. However, the main manufacturers had already been working on the arrival of this technology for some time, and the proof of this is the number of devices with 5G that we have seen this year. The iPhone 12 could not be late for this appointment.
In the end the doubt dissipated and, indeed, iPhone 12 offers 5G connectivity, so now we can only wait for the deployment of this type of network to progress. However, a leak that originates from Apple’s sales website, and its content is the following text:
«Does 5G work with Dual SIM?
When using two lines in Dual SIM mode, 5G data isn’t supported on either line and will fall back to 4G LTE. If customers are using eSIM only and are on a 5G-supported carrier and service plan, they’ll have 5G access«.
That is, those users who are going to buy an iPhone 12 and intend to use it in 5G networks with two lines through the Dual SIM function (with a SIM card and an electronic SIM), will find that it’s not possibleSince the moment there are two active lines on the iPhone 12, even if there is 5G connectivity, the connection will automatically be established on 4G. Of course, when the terminal has only one line configured again, 5G connectivity will return.
The problem, in principle, should be confined to iOS 14, it doesn’t appear to be a hardware issue, so hopefully the issue will be resolved sometime between the next iOS update and the turn of the year. It is a failure, yes, but for now it makes sense to be understanding. The key, without a doubt, will be set by Apple’s speed in solving it and that users of iPhone 12 in Dual SIM mode in 5G networks can enjoy maximum speed.
iPhone 12 Pro, success in pre-sale
Still, it’s not all bad news for Apple in relation to the iPhone 12. On the contrary, according to market research firm TF International Securities, lhe initial sales estimates have been exceeded, based on pre-purchases made since last Friday.
The initial estimate indicated that the Pro version of the iPhone 12 would represent, approximately, between 15% and 20%, a figure that has grown to between 30% and 35% of total sales. Some numbers that, as is already happening in some markets, are forcing Apple to delay the delivery date of the iPhone 12 Pro purchased in the pre-sale period. The counterpoint is found in the iPhone 12 Mini, with an initial supposed demand of 20-25%, and which has been revised downwards, standing at 10-15%.
