It has been months since we saw the first arrival of the Back Button Attachment, with which Sony intended to improve the gaming experience on PS4 and bring it closer to what we could of the future PS5. And in fact, the Japanese company has already told us that the current DualShock 4 controllers, as well as all the officially licensed third-party controllers currently compatible with the PS4, will also work on the PS5.
Platinum and Gold wireless headphones made by Sony will also continue to work on PS5, as will third-party headphones that can be connected via USB (to the console) or via an audio jack connector (on the remote). Although other peripherals such as the PlayStation Camera, used in some VR games, will need the use of a special adapter to work on the new console.
However, delving a little further into all these statements, we get confirmation that while the PS4 controller will be functional on the PS5, it will not be with its games. But how is this possible? Specifically, the DualShock 4 will offer us the possibility of navigating through the menu and the main interface of the new console, but when it comes to playing, they will only be compatible with games of their own generation (and presumably the previous ones). As they explain the Sony’s latest official statement, «We believe that PS5 games should take advantage of the new capabilities and features that we are bringing to the platform, including the features of the DualSense wireless controller.«.
However, this movement is also nothing new, since in fact we already saw how the old PS3 controllers were incompatible with the PS4, forcing us to change. A strategy that Microsoft itself also applied to Xbox 360 controllers for the Xbox One, but that we could see resolved in the new generation, since the Redmond company has promised to make the current Xbox One controllers compatible for use. on the Xbox Series X.
Microsoft has only made minor changes to its Xbox Series X controller, giving the company more freedom for existing hardware to work with future games. Sony, on the other hand, has designed its PS5 DualSense controller around adaptive triggers, an updated system of built-in microphones, and the innovative haptic feedback technology.
What else does PS5 have in store for us?
In addition to these advances, Sony has already announced that this week we will have a new State of Play presentation, where although the company has already assured that it will not talk about the PS5 hardware or the release dates, it will offer us some updates and news about some of the games revealed during its June gaming event.
State of Play returns Thursday at 1:00 pm Pacific!
What to expect:
▪️ A focus on upcoming PS4 & PS VR games

For the most part, it seems this State of Play broadcast will focus on upcoming games on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation VR, which added to the confirmed that none of the titles in charge of PlayStation Studios will be included, does not augur a conference focused on third parties, with some titles to consider such as Marvel’s Avengers, Resident Evil 8 0 Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.
With a duration of 40 minutes, the next State of Play will take place this Thursday, August 6 at 22:00 (Spanish peninsula time), and can be followed live through the accounts of Twitch and Youtube from PlayStation.
