Microsoft will buy TikTok despite the threat of Trump’s blockade in the United States. Or maybe thanks to him, because the talks with the Chinese firm ByteDance are going to accelerate.
Microsoft has released a declaration for confirm conversations to acquire TikTok. The Redmond giant explains that the negotiations will continue despite Trump’s statements and other issues raised in other countries related to the use of data: «Following a conversation between Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and President Donald J. Trump, Microsoft is ready to continue discussions to explore a purchase of TikTok in the United States. “
“Microsoft fully appreciates the importance of addressing the President’s concerns”says the company. Microsoft ensures that once it takes over TikTok, users will benefit from increased privacy, as all of their data will be located in the United States, thus saving the threat from Trump:
“Among other measures, Microsoft would ensure that all private data of US TikTok users is transferred and remains in the United States. To the extent that such data is currently stored or backed up outside of the United States, Microsoft will ensure that this data is removed from servers outside the country after it is transferred », clarifies.
Microsoft will buy TikTok
You know how the patio is. TikTok is the new phenomenon in social networks. A relatively recent (late 2016) mobile app that allows users to create short music videos and share them to the world. Its success has been as resounding as it is fast, it has pulverized in a short time the number of users of other popular services such as Instagram and its use has increased even more in times of confinement by COVID-19.
In the United States alone, the service has nearly 100 million users and it does not stop growing month by month, there and around the world. The service is owned by the Chinese company ByteDance And that’s where the problems stem from. The White House has accused them of «Links with the Chinese Communist Party» and the possibility that “Beijing was using the social network as a means to monitor and distribute propaganda”. As in the case of the Huawei lock, without any proof.
As a solution, ByteDance would have proposed reducing its participation in TikTok, opening the door for some other company, technological and preferably from the United States, to become shareholders. Everything indicates that it will be Microsoft, but not acquiring the entire company but its services for some countries:
“The two companies have notified their intention to explore a preliminary proposal that would involve a purchase of the TikTok service in the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand and that it would result in Microsoft owning and operating TikTok in these markets. Microsoft may invite other US investors to participate in a minority interest in this purchase. ” they point out.
“This new structure would build on the experience that TikTok users currently adore, while adding world-class security, privacy and digital security protections. The operating model for the service would be built to guarantee transparency to users, as well as adequate security supervision by the governments of these countries. ”
Microsoft will speed up talks with ByteDance and expects to conclude negotiations by September 15. Take it for granted: Microsoft will buy TikTok at least to get hold of the service in the designated countries. The threat from Trump, which would otherwise have ended the talks, has increased the pressure on ByteDance and is surely the last push for the operation to occur. It’s hard not to think that the recurring National security is used to measure thinking about commercial strategies. Or strategic … see 5G as a great example.
