Losing the Internet connection can become a very important problem, especially if it happens at that moment when we find ourselves doing something important that we can not finish if we are not “online”. For example, think of a student who is completing a job and has to email it, or have to enroll online, or needs to complete a paperwork within a specified time frame.
We could also give other examples where losing the Internet connection can ruin our day: when we are enjoying our online games favorites, or streaming multimedia content, and also in those cases in which we are taking advantage of a short break to browse the network of networks. Yes, the list of examples would be very long.
If your Internet connection does not work and you do not know what to do, do not worry, in this article we will share with you five very simple tips that will help you discover what is happening and give you a solution. It is important to note that if the problem resides in your Internet connection provider, or in the provider of the services you use, you will have no choice but to wait for it to solve them, you will not be able to do anything.
Do you have an Internet connection on other devices?
It is certainly the first thing we should do, check if we have internet connection on other devices, or if only one of them has lost it. For example, if you have an Internet connection on your PC but do not have an Internet connection on your smartphone, you should check your Wi-Fi configuration settings, or restart your terminal.
In case you have an Internet connection on the other devices, be clear, the problem is not in your internet connection, but in the configuration, the wiring or in the device itself from which you cannot connect to the Internet.
When we find cases in which we do not have an Internet connection on a PC or console connected by cable it’s a good idea to check the wiring. Although everything seems well connected, something as simple as removing and replacing the cables can solve the problem.
Check the status of the service and your provider
If we do not have an Internet connection on any of our devices, the problem is probably with our Internet provider. As we indicated at the beginning, if this occurs, we we will not be able to solve anythingSo it’s not worth wasting time.
The best thing we can do, at this point, is to contact our provider to make sure that the service is fine or that, on the contrary, they are suffering some kind of service drop.
In the event that a service interruption is confirmed to us they should give us an estimated settlement date, and we would only have to wait.
Scan for malware
Suppose the provider has told us that everything is fine, but we still don’t have the Internet. Well, we have a lot of options, but we should start with an antivirus scan, since it is one of the simplest and fastest possible solutions that we have within our reach.
If you use Windows 10 you can use Windows Defender, since it is quite reliable and effective. Many types of malware they can consume bandwidth or even block web browsingSo don’t underestimate the value of a good antivirus scan when it comes to solving an Internet connection problem.
Remember that, in some cases, the problem may be due to the antivirus itself. If at the end of the analysis no threat is found you can try, in an instant, to disable antivirus and check if your connection works correctly. If so, you should adjust the antivirus settings, and if you do not fix the problem with that, you will have no choice but to eliminate it.
Reboot all devices including router
It is a classic, but it works wonderfully. A simple restart can become a solution to a multitude of problems, thanks to the “reset” effect of the configuration and the most important values that occurs during the process.
To restart the router we must turn it off and disconnect it from the electrical network for a minute. Then we reconnect and go. If we have restarted the router it is recommended also restart different devices that they were affected by that loss of connection.
If we don’t do those restarts and just stick to the router it may not have any effect. I am not telling you without reason, it has happened to me on more than one occasion.
Configuration, updates and troubleshooting
If none of the above has worked for us and we continue without an Internet connection, we have no choice but toonernos to “tinker”. The first thing you should look at is the configuration we have and make sure everything fits: standards, compatibilities and others. For example, you may have tried to connect a smartphone without Wi-Fi 5 to a Wi-Fi 5 connection, so it is normal that you do not have Internet.
Another interesting option, and more useful than it seems, is to resort to Windows 10 troubleshooter, that looks for errors, modifications and failures that may be affecting your Internet connection, and automatically resolves them.
Finally you should also search software and firmware updates. If none of this works for you, you can try formatting and restore your devices to their factory settings, but remember that this is always “the last option”.
