Bloober Team has confirmed the requirements of The Medium, one of the games that generated the most interest during the last event dedicated to Xbox Series X. Its launch will take place in December 2020, and will also come to PC (Windows 10).
We are, therefore, before a new generation first batch game, which means that The Medium’s requirements set the standard that new generation games will have during this first stage. I want to make this issue very clear, we are talking about the first stage in the same context that we applied at the time to PS4 and Xbox One. The games that arrived between the end of 2013 and 2015 had minimum and recommended requirements much more affordable than those that reached Starting in 2016, and with the launch of PS4 Pro and Xbox One X, there was another significant leap.
If we transfer this to the new generation, the conclusion we can draw is very simple. The requirements that we are going to see could be maintained as the benchmark to follow during the first two years, in the second stage we could see a considerable increaseAnd if Sony and Microsoft decide to launch a PS5 Pro and an improved Xbox Series X, PC gaming requirements would increase again.
That said, we went to see the requirements of The Medium.
The Medium: minimum requirements
- Requires a 64-bit processor and Windows 10 64-bit.
- Processor: Intel Core i5-6600 or AMD Ryzen 5 2500X.
- Memory: 8 GB of RAM.
- Graphics card for 1080p gaming: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB or AMD Radeon R9 390X.
- DirectX: Version 11.
- Storage: 30 GB of available space.
- Sound card: DirectX compatible.
As we can see there is a significant jump to the requirements level, since this level had been recommended in titles of the previous generation (PS4 and Xbox One).
We have a major error in CPU equivalency, as the Ryzen 5 2500X has four cores and eight threads, and the Core i5 6600 adds four cores and eight threads. Its closest equivalence would be the Ryzen 3 1300X.
The Medium: recommended requirements
- Requires a 64-bit processor and Windows 10 64-bit.
- Processor: Intel Core i5-9600 or AMD Ryzen 7 3700X.
- Memory: 16 GB of RAM.
- Graphics card to play in 1080p: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti or Radeon RX Vega 56, to play in 4K we will need an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 or a Radeon RX 5700 XT.
- DirectX: Version 11.
- Storage: 30 GB of available space.
- Sound card: DirectX compatible.
- To play 4K with ray tracing enabled they recommend an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080.
In this case we also have another considerable jump, and we see that we are right when we recommend a GTX 1660 Super for play smoothly in 1080p (It performs practically at the same level as a GTX 1660 Ti and is much cheaper).
There are no major errors in GPU equivalencies, although we must be clear that the RX Vega 56 do a little more than the GTX 1660 Ti, and the same goes for the Radeon RX 5700 XT versus the RTX 2070.
Where we do have a major error is in the CPU equivalency, since the Ryzen 7 3700X has 8 cores and 16 threads and the Core i5 9600 has 6 cores and 12 threads. The correct equivalency would be a Ryzen 5 3600.
To finish I leave you a video that has recently been released where we can see a real game sequence of The Medium showing its full potential. The concept of playing in two dimensions is very interesting, and as we can see it is very successful. Both are rendered in real time, and simultaneously. The Xbox Series X version of the game will work in 4K resolution and will keep 30 FPS stable, as indicated by the Bloober Team.
