Samsung Galaxy Book S debuts Lakefield, Intel’s answer to ARM

Samsung has announced the launch of the Galaxy Book S, an ultraportable that stands out for being the first device It arrives on the market with the new Intel Lakefield processor, which will also be used in the new generation of folding devices such as Microsoft’s Surface Neo.

Samsung marketed this same model at the time with a Snapdragon 8cx chipset under ‘Windows over ARM’. The platform has not worked due to its inability to run Win32 applications and lack of performance, and it has been rumored for months that the South Korean firm would make a hardware base change.

And it has come in favor of the Intel Lakefield, a new platform for Intel since it is the first from the company that combines processing cores from different architectures. This design will sound familiar to you because ARM has been using it for years with big.LITTLE technology and we can find it on millions of smartphones or tablets.

This Lakefiled, model Core i5-L16G7, is a processor with five physical cores and the same number of threads. It includes a high-performance “Sunny Cove” core of the same architecture that Intel uses in the 10th generation Core, Ice Lake processors and four other lower-performance “Tremont” cores, but with higher energy efficiency and lower cost in order to balance performance, battery life and the final sale price.

The rest of the characteristics were already known and are those of a high mobility premium ultraportable weighing less than one kilogram. It employs a passive cooling system without annoying fans, full connectivity with LTE broadband and Wi-Fi 6, and good long autonomy.
