Micron Technology has announced a integral program Empowerment that will provide early access to technical resources and products based on the new DDR5 memories to ecosystem partners.
The Technology Empowerment Program, which semiconductor companies such as Cadence, Montage, Rambus, Renesas and Synopsys have joined, will help in the design, development and qualification of the next generation computing platforms that will use this type of memory, the DRAM more expected to be available later this year in large data centers.
Qualified partners who enroll in the program will have access to Micron’s world-class collaboration and support and enjoy other benefits, including:
- DDR5 components and modules.
- New DDR5 products as they become available, including the laptop version.
- Technical resources including data sheets, electrical and thermal models to assist in product development and evaluation, as well as integrity inquiries and other technical support.
- Collaboration with other ecosystem partners who can assist in chip and system level design.
DDR5 memories, features
Although the announcement of Micron, one of the main memory manufacturers, is focused on the channel of business partners, it allows us to update the information of the next version of this important standard and its advantages over DDR4 that you can see summarized in the following image:
performance. Just like DDR4 offered great performance improvements over DDR3, DDR5 will over previous ones. Among its features, the possibility of doubling the base working frequency of DDR4 located at 2,133 MHz, up to 4,266 MHz in DDR5 and with a maximum of 6,400 MHz. All this on normalized values because in practice they can be higher as with DDR4, where manufacturers practice overclocking techniques to increase the base working frequency.
Efficiency. The fifth generation will offer other advantages such as independent activation, writing, reading operations or refresh the information. All of them will be autonomous according to the groups with memory banks, something that will improve the efficiency and performance of this development.
Module size. It will also be important to improve the density under the latest chip-building techniques that didn’t exist at the launch of DDR4. In this way, the increase in capacity of the DIMM modules will be overwhelming and the costs will decrease (or should) in order to install a greater amount of RAM.
The first DDR5 memories are expected to reach servers and data centers this year (if the COVID pandemic does not prevent it) and next year to personal computers, although its deployment will be very gradual and a situation similar to the one we live with the transition from DDR3 to DDR4 memory and the coexistence of several generations some years will repeat.
